President-elect Muhammadu Buhari has vowed not to forgive or forget the perpetrators of violence before, during and after the 2015 elections, particularly in Rivers state. Buhari said those who carried out the attacks on citizens in Rivers state would be confronted with “fact and figures”, implying that they would be probed . “
To those who participated in violence during the last election in Rivers state, we will confront them with facts and figures,” he said. “We will not forgive and we will forget those who perpetrated killings and arson in Rivers state during the elections. At least, this is the much we owe to Nigerians.” The president-elect, who spoke when he received a delegation from Rivers state led by, Gabriel Tobby, former deputy governor of the state, in Abuja on Wednesday, also assured Nigerians that they would get the respect they deserve from his government. Speaking earlier, Tobby told journalists that the outcome of the presidential and the gubernatorial elections in the state did not reflect the wishes of the people. He described the election as a coup, saying that “the delegation to Buhari had shown that Rivers people were behind the president-elect before, during and the after election”. He added that the state would give the incoming government its full support, and also appealed to Buhari not to forget the many sacrifices of Rotimi Ameachi, Rivers state governor, asking that he should be compensated for his contributions. The presidential and governorship elections in Rivers state were so violent (a victim pictured) that Taiwo George, TheCable’s reporter who covered it (and was himself a victim of a robbery attack on journalists) described what he saw as “Rivers (state) of blood”.
