The Kano state police
command has arrested a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ward chairman for
coordingating the seiure of ballot boxes, Magaji Musa Majia, Kano police
spokesman, disclosed on Saturday.
According to Majia, “about 7:30am while the staff of the Independent
National Electoral Commission (INEC) were distributing election
materials in Madobi local government area and at Kauran Mata ward, a
gang of thugs led by Hussaini Ibrahim of the same village who served as
the ward chairman of the PDP and an agent of the party who wore its tag
conspired with 18 others armed with dangerous weapons attacked, seized
about 4015 ballot papers and other sensitive materials, tore and set
them ablaze”.
The Kano police spokesman however added that the INEC staff and the card
reader were safe.
“The commissioner of police Kano state, Ibrahim K. Idris, personally
rushed to the remote village and ensured safety. And he immediately
reported the incident to the state INEC office who reallocated voting
materials and supplied under tight security escort,” he said.
Majia observed that accreditation and voting went smoothly thereafter,
noting that no single injury or fatality was recorded.
He also disclosed that 14 identified suspects had been arrested while
two knives, one cutlass, and one stick had been recovered.
“Five suspects are still at large and investigation into the incident
has already commenced,” he added.
