Attahiru Jega, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), is not entirely ruling out the possibility of resigning his post, but he says there must be “grounds” for him to do that. One of the rumours that accompanied recent fears about the postponement of the 2015 elections was that Jega was planning to step down as INEC chairman,
owing to pressure from certain interests seeking the movement of the February 14 and 28 dates originally scheduled for the polls. Asked at Saturday’s media briefing during which the six-week postponement of the elections was announced, Jega stated his intention to finish his term, which expires on June 30. “If there are grounds for me to resign, I will gladly resign,” he said. “If there are no grounds, I will not.” Asked what would happen at the expiration of his tenure in June, he said: “When we get to the bridge, we will cross it.” At the briefing, Jega announced INEC’s decision to reschedule the presidential and national assembly elections for March 28, 2015 and the state governorship and state assembly elections for April 11, 2015.
